Velox Cast

Brief:

To create a novel medical device to be presented to a panel of industry experts at the end of the placement

Our preliminary research turned up several papers on the efficacy of Microvibrations (high-frequency, low-magnitude) in bone regeneration. The idea was still undeveloped at the time but promising nonetheless. Whilst it was not within our remit to develop and fully test a medical device, we decided to create proof-of-concept for the inclusion of vibration technologies in orthopaedic casts.

We also designed the Velox to be extremely light, easy to wear and adjust and visually stylish. The internal sleeve has light bracing qualities and is breathable and comfortable next to the skin. The outside split is removable, for more comfort later in the healing process, and works like a whiteboard so people can still write messages on their cast.

Had time permitted we would have further developed an app for control of the vibrations either by the user or a healthcare professional, and incorporated physiotherapy instructions to work alongside the vibrations and further assist in healing.
